I’m going to go ahead and say this… I’m not a fan of gelatin desserts. I don’t know if it’s all those times I was forced to eat jello in the hospital, or the fact that it’s made of ground up bones, or both- though agar isn’t any better because it reminds me of prepping petri dishes in the lab.
Anyway…. I wanted to make something creepy and disgusting this Halloween, and when I came upon this tutorial for making a valentine Jell-o heart, I couldn’t resist. My version of the heart doesn’t bleed since my kids wanted to eat it and the thought of picking out plastic bag bits to prevent choking was just a little too stressful for me. I want pretend scary, not real scary!
The instructions in the tutorial were easy to follow, and this was a lot easier to make than I thought it would be, though a bit time consuming to decorate. It was all worth it though and the results were the scariest, most disgusting thing I have ever made. See for yourself!
…Oh, and be warned. It is pretty disgusting looking…
…
Ready???
…
Here goes:

Use a little strawberry pancake syrup with a few drops of Hershey's syrup mixed in to make the "blood" more realistic.
Here are some more pics of the decorating process.

Use food coloring to add deep blue, purple, and red shades. Mix with a tiny bit of icing whitener for highlight.

Carve out the arteries with an espresso spoon or a small measuring spoon. Use a straw for the small one. Paint the inside with deep purple.

The black plate didn't show the blood well enough so I changed plates. Pour the berry syrup "blood" over the heart, and add some to the arteries to look like it's pouring out.
If you’re really sick, you can set a fancy table and serve your heart on a platter.

Wow, the detail on the heart is amazing! Well done!
Lol it looks gross and appetizing at the same time.
This is FANTASTIC! We are thinking we’ll have to try this over here in our office.
That is shiveringly, yuckish great use of jello.
Congrats. for freaking out your friends and people at your door for trick or treating!!
Totally disgusting and so appropriate! I love it! I also have issues with jello due to it’s contents. You should enter the picture in a contest.
Simply put: Wow!
I’m super impressed — the detail, the “execution” (pun intended…)
Here’s mine: Oh Darn! – as Olive Oil always mutters when in a pickle, not Popye he mutters to himself knowing it’ll free him, afterputting up for last last 12hrs ago, to enjoy the festivities “I knows what I can stand, and I can’t stands no more”- (That’s my idea of a pun…) I know sick huh, but i love it.

wooowww!!! that looks chilling and so scary!!!
Yes, that really is disgusting. I’m impressed with your many hours of hard work and the skill involved to create a food item too gross to eat. I’m kind of at a loss of words . . .
Thank you! Actually my kids loved eating it
Leaving us knowing that the more gross or disgusting, the more kids want it. I am guessing you bought a heart mold at the party store. very well done. That is on my next year’s Halloween list! Well Done and a perfect Freshly Pressed!
Thank you!
That is just disgusting — but very, very cool! Well done. And congrats on being FP’d.
Thanks!
This looks amazing! Hats off to you for such a great job! Next year, I think you should go all the way and make it bleed…or maybe wait until the kids are a bit older so nobody has nightmares!
This is awesome!
It looks very convincing. I don’t think I could eat it and look at it at the same time.
Oh, god. That is positively horrifying. My friend in Sweden will love it! Going to share!
Marshmallows ans gelatin (Jello) vegetarians/vegans don’t eat!
You are correct! This can easily be made vegetarian/vegan by using agar agar “jello” which can be found at whole foods and most health food stores, and by substituting nondairy milk such as coconut milk for the canned evaporated milk
Haha…if i made this for a girl, ill say, “Can a guy eat your heart out?” LOL
http://kalafels.wordpress.com/
Looks awesome! Where did you get the mold for the heart? I’d love to make a whole set of organs for my anatomy class next semester, great study aid and snack… yum! Again Awesome idea for Halloween.
I got it at the supermarket! You can find them here as well http://bit.ly/vt7UZ6 That would be an awesome anatomy study! Would definitely be an unforgettable lesson lol
Absolutely horrible looking, but still very cool!
Thanks for sharing your ‘gruesome’ pictures and congrats on freshly pressed!
That’s so disgusting and awesome at the same time!
Love the last picture! A nice glass of Chianti, perhaps?
OMG! This is the coolest blog post ever! Stunning photographs and what an incredible jello concept.. The fact is that I would never have even imagined it possible to make this. Thank you so much for sharing your photos. Angelique
Oh la la! Wanna scare my friend with this on halloween night! This will make her shiver!

Impressive!
i like how there’s a little “blood” on the knife, ha! i don’t care how creepy it is… you are an artist!
Aww thanks Denise! That means a lot
Oooh, creepy! I’m having a Halloween party on Sunday and this might be the perfect jello-shot heart mold thing. Thanks for posting!
Dam that jello looks gooood!
That is absolutely disgusting. I so want some.
That’s pretty amazing!
Wow, that really looks amazing! I love the detail on it and the colors just really make the heart just pop. I bet it tastes yummy too.
I love eating brain.

I have a brain mold too! lol
Now this is ‘interesting’ and a challenge to appetite at the same time:) Well done.

Pretty cool, how long did it take in total??
Cheers,
Thanks! I wasn’t keeping track, but I’m pretty sure it took over an hour to decorate.
Hilarious!! Eating heart (of any human) is a crime.
ewwww…. it’s so realistic I’m gonna avoid jell-o for a while. The detail is incredible!
I’m no fan of jello myself, but this is impressive.

Okay that definitely grossed me out…but in a yummy kinda way
What did your kids think of it, did they gobble it up or was it too gross?
Thank you! I didn’t think they’d go for it but they loved it! I have this theory that the more disgusting something is the more kids will like it (as long as it’s sweet) lol They have no excuse for not eating their veggies now!
Même J’aime les gâteaux. J’aime la façon dont le coeur a l’air … hmmm délicieux.
Even i love cakes. I love the way the heart looks… hmmm delicious.
That’s….amazing and so damn disgusting at the same time
Wow! Looks really disgusting
Wow! Rarely do I want to try my hand at making something that looks GROSS! lol Good work – amazing detail!!
Thanks! It took forever but was well worth it
It looks so true… nice.
While I don’t think I’d have the guts to actually eat that; that is the most fantastic thing I’ve ever seen!
So cool!
Wow, that is the coolest, creepiest thing I’ve ever seen. But I couldn’t imagine actually eating it
Yeah.. I tried a bite just to taste but that’s as far as I got. My kids loved it though! Kids are weird…

Gosh I kept looking at it with my eyes partly shut … terrible stuff to actually eat.
Hahaha! Trust me, this is the only way I would ever eat a heart! Once we cut it up it wasn’t so gross looking and it actually tasted like fruit punch lol
I’m speechless! Amazing blog. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, that’s kind of how I felt about it lol
That was a great dish! It really does look like a genuine heart! Now the question is, did you guys eat it and did it taste good?! Very nicely done! Great artwork you put into it!
If it is okay with you, I would like to mention my own blog that I just started and share the link with your readers. It’s called Logic Meets Reason and it would be great if you and your readers could comment, subscribe, and take a look at the pieces I have posted! Here is the link: http://www.logicmeetsreason.wordpress.com.
Thank you! Actually, yes it did taste good! Jello isn’t really my think but I took a bite and it tasted kind of like fruit punch since I mixed the strawberry and orange gelatin together. My kids loved it even though it was kind of sickening to look at. Once we cut it it wasn’t so bad lol. I’ll go check out your blog, I always love reading what on other people’s minds
That actually does sound really good! I could imagine the initial difficulty there must have been in eating the gelatin considering its realistic characteristic (especially with those carved out arteries!)! Glad it turned out to be such a success! Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out! I really appreciate it!
Eek! I like jello even LESS now!
Aww sorry to hear that. It was all in good fun…
Wow! Totally realistic… I would not eat it!
THIS. IS. SO. AMAZING. It’s the perfect, most disgustingly awesome Halloween dessert I have ever seen! Thank you so much for a wonderful post!! (:
Wow! Very well done! Looks yummy!
This is totally disgusting and may change my mind about the traditional Jello salad we have at Thanksgiving!
LOL! You know, now that you mention it, the company that makes these also makes turkey jello molds… I guess there’s a mold for every holiday now?
Wow, that is the most realistic Halloween scare treat I have ever seen! Truly disgusting. Good job.
Mmm, I want that inside of my body
oh my god – this is SERIOUSLY hallow-tastic!!
This is amazing!
eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww they are disgusting! It’s fabulous:)
Very creative… Follow us http://www.letsgetitcooking.com
This reminds of Future Shorts “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”, made as a video for the music of the same name by Gnarls Barkley. Loved it.
It would be great to make these jell-o organs as decorations for a haunted house—they’re terrifyingly realistic! I don’t think I could eat it though it makes me squeamish
Great idea!
Most excellent!
I don’t know if I could actually eat that. I’m curious but by the looks of it I am afraid it might be raw. Also, being vegetarian, I avoid gelatin. But perhaps this could be an exception since I have very morbid curiosity about it. Wow. Looks great and real.
Thank you! If you want to try this without breaking your vegetarian diet (I was a vegan for a while, then vegetarian for 2 years so I can relate) you can use agar based “jell-o” mixes. I’ve seen them at Whole Foods and have actually tried jell-0 shots made with them and it was almost identical. A great alternative if you want to try it
Ugh, it makes me ill just looking at it… job well done! I’m grossed out but I love it.
Happy Halloween!
-K
I just posted about my jello brain that the kids and I made this weekend in honor of Halloween. This heart is awesome!
Cool! I’m sure the kids loved it! I have the brain mold but I haven’t tried it yet.

Congrats on being freshly pressed. Wow… the most creative I’ve become with jello was a parfait. Wonderful blog – such fun…
ewww – that is brilliantly discusting! XD
This is SO AWESOME!! What a great idea! As a lover of jello, and of horror movies, I must say, I’d love to see that on my plate this Halloween.
Very creative
Wow, that’s so elaborate! I’ve never been a jello fan, but I do think that the heart on a platter is very impressive. Happy Halloween!
THIS IS AWESOME!
Nicely done but as far as I’m concerned there is only a scary side to Jello at the best of times.
that’s awesome! looks delish!
This looks so delicious

Very Creative.Perfect recipe for a Halloween party for the adults.

Great Blog i come again to your blog …..:)

This is soooo brilliant :O Thanks for sharing!
This is so icky and so convincing! I remember someone making a jell-o brain for a Halloween when I was younger (like kindergarten young) and being 100% convinced it was a real brain, until I learned that it tasted like strawberry on a dare.
Thanks! It’s amazing how literally kids take things like that. I would never have even thought about tasting anything like that as a kid lol My kids loved it though (once it was cut up and didn’t look so yucky)
oooo want to make miniature ones for cupcakes now!!!!
