Eat your heart out… The scary side of Jell-o *Not for the squeamish*

28 Oct

I’m going to go ahead and say this… I’m not a fan of gelatin desserts. I don’t know if it’s all those times I was forced to eat jello in the hospital, or the fact that it’s made of ground up bones, or both- though agar isn’t any better because it reminds me of prepping petri dishes in the lab.

Anyway…. I wanted to make something creepy and disgusting this Halloween, and when I came upon this tutorial for making a valentine Jell-o heart, I couldn’t resist. My version of the heart doesn’t bleed since my kids wanted to eat it and the thought of picking out plastic bag bits to prevent choking was just a little too stressful for me. I want pretend scary, not real scary!

The instructions in the tutorial were easy to follow, and this was a lot easier to make than I thought it would be, though a bit time consuming to decorate. It was all worth it though and the results were the scariest, most disgusting thing I have ever made.  See for yourself!

…Oh, and be warned. It is pretty disgusting looking…

Ready???

Here goes:

Use a little strawberry pancake syrup with a few drops of Hershey's syrup mixed in to make the "blood" more realistic.

Here are some more pics of the decorating process.

I mixed one 3 oz package of strawberry with one 3 oz package of orange to get a more "meaty" color

After 6 hours in the fridge

Use food coloring to add deep blue, purple, and red shades. Mix with a tiny bit of icing whitener for highlight.

Carve out the arteries with an espresso spoon or a small measuring spoon. Use a straw for the small one. Paint the inside with deep purple.

Add some blue line detail to the veins, and highlight with some red.

The black plate didn't show the blood well enough so I changed plates. Pour the berry syrup "blood" over the heart, and add some to the arteries to look like it's pouring out.

If you’re really sick, you can set a fancy table and serve your heart on a platter.

Et voila! Romantic candlelit Halloween dinner... for cannibals.

      • theamberlight October 30, 2011 at 6:22 pm #

Leaving us knowing that the more gross or disgusting, the more kids want it. I am guessing you bought a heart mold at the party store. very well done. That is on my next year’s Halloween list! Well Done and a perfect Freshly Pressed!

  35. Pat Volk October 28, 2011 at 6:53 pm #

Marshmallows ans gelatin (Jello) vegetarians/vegans don’t eat!

    • lillihaskell October 28, 2011 at 6:56 pm #

You are correct! This can easily be made vegetarian/vegan by using agar agar “jello” which can be found at whole foods and most health food stores, and by substituting nondairy milk such as coconut milk for the canned evaporated milk :)

  36. kalafels October 28, 2011 at 7:10 pm #

Haha…if i made this for a girl, ill say, “Can a guy eat your heart out?” LOL

Thank you! Actually, yes it did taste good! Jello isn’t really my think but I took a bite and it tasted kind of like fruit punch since I mixed the strawberry and orange gelatin together. My kids loved it even though it was kind of sickening to look at. Once we cut it it wasn’t so bad lol. I’ll go check out your blog, I always love reading what on other people’s minds :)

      • Logic Meets Reason October 30, 2011 at 4:33 pm #

That actually does sound really good! I could imagine the initial difficulty there must have been in eating the gelatin considering its realistic characteristic (especially with those carved out arteries!)! Glad it turned out to be such a success! Thank you so much for taking the time to check it out! I really appreciate it!

  106. natasiarose October 30, 2011 at 3:37 pm #

This reminds of Future Shorts “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”, made as a video for the music of the same name by Gnarls Barkley. Loved it.

It would be great to make these jell-o organs as decorations for a haunted house—they’re terrifyingly realistic! I don’t think I could eat it though it makes me squeamish :P Great idea!

  119. macgurrl October 30, 2011 at 10:54 pm #

    Most excellent!

  120. Professor Vegetable October 31, 2011 at 1:16 am #

I don’t know if I could actually eat that. I’m curious but by the looks of it I am afraid it might be raw. Also, being vegetarian, I avoid gelatin. But perhaps this could be an exception since I have very morbid curiosity about it. Wow. Looks great and real.

Thank you! If you want to try this without breaking your vegetarian diet (I was a vegan for a while, then vegetarian for 2 years so I can relate) you can use agar based “jell-o” mixes. I’ve seen them at Whole Foods and have actually tried jell-0 shots made with them and it was almost identical. A great alternative if you want to try it :)

Ugh, it makes me ill just looking at it… job well done! I’m grossed out but I love it.

    Happy Halloween!

I just posted about my jello brain that the kids and I made this weekend in honor of Halloween. This heart is awesome!

      • lillihaskell October 31, 2011 at 10:06 pm #

Cool! I’m sure the kids loved it! I have the brain mold but I haven’t tried it yet.

This is SO AWESOME!! What a great idea! As a lover of jello, and of horror movies, I must say, I’d love to see that on my plate this Halloween.

Wow, that’s so elaborate! I’ve never been a jello fan, but I do think that the heart on a platter is very impressive. Happy Halloween!

  139. colleenanderson October 31, 2011 at 12:18 pm #

Nicely done but as far as I’m concerned there is only a scary side to Jello at the best of times.

This is so icky and so convincing! I remember someone making a jell-o brain for a Halloween when I was younger (like kindergarten young) and being 100% convinced it was a real brain, until I learned that it tasted like strawberry on a dare.

    • lillihaskell November 15, 2011 at 2:04 pm #

Thanks! It’s amazing how literally kids take things like that. I would never have even thought about tasting anything like that as a kid lol My kids loved it though (once it was cut up and didn’t look so yucky)
